I am often asked “Does Fruit Make you Fat?”
I remember watching a weight loss segment on Oprah
She said “I worked out why I am not losing weight and it’s because I snack on grapes when I am at the TV studio”
Yeah right…
She forgot to mention the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and the rest of the heavy fat laden foods she loves to indulge in.
I often tell clients to think about this scenario:
You are stranded on a deserted island for 6 weeks and the ONLY food source was fruit, veggies, seeds, nuts and fresh water…
For 6 weeks you only ate fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts.
Do you think after 6 weeks you would?
Gain weight?
Stay the same?
or Drop weight?
I guarantee you would drop weight
It’s not fruit that makes people fat…
Its highly processed,
added sugar,
added fat foods,
OVER consumption
along with lack of the right type of exercise…
That makes people fat.
Fruit does NOT make you FAT
Fruit can actually help you to lose weight FAST…
Fruit is packed full of nutrients and fibre.
Nutrients and fibre are a key element for getting your body into awesome shape.
Nutrients give your body “what it needs” so you don’t get cravings.
The fibre and water in fruit makes you feel full, another important factor in your success.
Fruit is very high in easy to digest fibre, so it breaks down quickly and leaves your system fast helping rid your body of toxins.
How to Enjoy Fruit
I love fruit first thing in the morning with my oats.
This gives me great energy levels for my busy days.
On Sunday morning I love some fruit on top of my Slimdown Pancakes
But I heard that fruit is full of sugar?
Added sugar is the sugar you need to avoid.
Not naturally occurring sugar found in fruit and vegetables.
The few grams of naturally occurring sugar in fruit are NOTHING compared to the amount of ADDED sugar in “non-foods”.
Skipping fruit and missing out on the
nutrients,
fibre,
energy
and the feeling of fullness that fruit creates is as silly as missing a workout because you might sweat.
But I heard fructose was evil?
There are far too many misguided programs out there that “demonise” one type of sugar and they are all just nonsense.
The worst part of these programs is that people replace one type of processed sugar for another processed sugar.
Changing the type of sugar makes no difference to your results.
It is all still processed sugar.
Replacing natural fruit with processed sugar is even sillier.
What type of fruit is the best?
There is no such thing as a bad fruit.
Chose any fruit that is in season and you enjoy eating.
Some people obsess over one fruit having a few more grams of natural sugar than another.
At the end of the day, you may save 1 gram of natural sugar if you don’t eat this or that but that 1 gram is not the difference between a muffin top and ripped abs.
